How’d you come up with the idea to make the film a hybrid of documentary and scripted narrative? I pitched to him and did a horrible job [laughs], and I don’t think it made any sense. What’s strange is that when we were writing the narrative we were like, “Oh, Charlyne’s character won’t change through other people’s stories” … In the beginning — I think I was like 19 when I came up with the idea for the documentary — I think I was more naïve than I was skeptical or bitter or cynical. In Paper Heartindie heartthrob Michael Cerathat she doesn’t believe in love. But after she falls for Cera, the film’s focus shifts to follow the couple as they stutter and stumble through the growing pains of young romance.Intertwining reality and storytelling (these two used to date!) Yi and Michael Cera go on a quest to understand what love really is, interviewing ministers, kids, and lovebirds all over the country.
